The community gathered this evening to hear Dr. Roger Lipsey speak about
the spirtual journey of Dag Hammarskjöld. Dag Hammarskjöld was the
General Secretary of the United Nations during the 1950's and early 60's,
a formative and challenging time for the organization.
Reading from Hammarskjöld's journal, published posthumously as
Markings, Dr. Lipsey paused to give us background on his life and
observations about his personality and thought.
Dr. Lipsey has recently completed a book on Dag Hammarskjöld, which will
be published later this year by the University of Michigan Press called,
Dag Hammarskjöld for the 21st Century.
Dr. Lipsey has published books and articles on a wide range of topics,
such as the spiritual in art, including the book Angelic Mistakes:
The Art of Thomas Merton with Paul Pearson. He is an authority on
the renowned philosopher of art, Ananda Coomaraswamy, and the Sufi
teacher, Gurdjieff.
