Lenten austerity came to a climax on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. No bells were rung; no hymns or antiphons were sung. The skies themselves turned grey and bleak. Then, during the Easter Vigil, mourning turned to joy as the Church began celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In the darkness of night, monks processed into the abbey church with the freshly blessed and lit Paschal candle. They were joined by dozens of neighbors and by the many guests staying in the recently reopened retreat house.

Chanting the Exsultet inside, transitional deacon Br. Lawrence sang, "This is the night that with a pillar of fire banished the darkness of sin!"

At the start of the Gloria, the sanctuary candles were lit and the church pulsed with light. With the rest of the Church, the community has been singing "Allelulia" ever since.

The monks thank everyone who joined them in celebrating Holy Week and wish a joyous, blessed Easter to all.
