Gethsemani's three junior monks renewed their vows this summer.

After a six-month postulancy and two years in the novitiate, monks and nuns become juniors through temporary vows of stability, obedience and conversationem morem (fidelity to the monastic way of life).

As juniors, they undertake these obligations for three years, or three periods of one year, before taking solemn, lifelong vows. At Gethsemani, brothers usually opt for three periods of one year.

In May, Br. Matthias renewed his vows a second time, marking the beginning of his third year as a junior. Br. Abel and Br. Joseph renewed their vows for the first time in August.

Compared to the initial taking of vows, which is done in the Chapter Room, and Solemn Vows, which occur in the abbey church, vow renewals are a relatively simple affair conducted privately in the abbot’s office. Yet much commitment and grace are still needed to make such a step.

Please pray for our brothers and for all the Order's monks and nuns in formation.
