One of America's most influential Catholic writers, Thomas Merton passed away 50 years ago today. Known then and now to Gethsemani's monks as Fr. Louis, Merton's influence can still be felt today. To mark the occasion, The Thomas Merton Society at Bellarmine University organized a series of events throughout 2018.

On the anniversary itself, Rt. Rev. Joseph Kurtz, Archbishop of Louisville, celebrated a Mass at Louisville's Cathedral of the Assumption. Dom Elias Dietz, abbot of Gethsemani, concelebrated. Fr. Lawrence Morey, also a monk of Gethsemani, delivered the homily, which focused on the role of community in Merton's life and work. Details of the homily can be found in The Record newspaper.
