On the feast of St. Benedict, 11 July 2017, Br. Lawrence was instituted as an Acolyte.

The office of Acolyte is the highest of the minor orders in the Catholic Church. It can be conferred by a superior, but must be done during a mass. It confers the function of an ordinary Eucharistic minister.

This may sound like a demotion from an "extraordinary" Eucharistic minister, but it is not. Br. Lawrence will, in effect, be the first called upon to administer the Eucharist if there is not a sufficient number of priests to do so.

In the rite of institution, Fr. Elias delivered a homily addressing the meaning of the office, conferred the office (see the photograph above), then presented Br. Lawrence with a paten containing hosts about to be consecrated (see the photograph below). Br. Lawrence then processed with the paten, along with those carrying the other gifts, to the altar. He also presented the guests with the consecrated wine later at mass.

We ask for your prayers for Br. Lawrence and for the community of Gethsemani.
