19 April, 2018 - Dom Malachy of Holy Trinity passes away
Dom Malachy Flaherty, one of the founders of Holy Trinity Abbey and longtime abbot there, died on April 19. Born in 1924 in Bloomfield, Ky., Dom Malachy entered Gethsemani in 1943.
In 1947, he and other Gethsemani monks departed to found Holy Trinity in Utah; he made his solemn profession there in 1949.
Dom Malachy was ordained a priest in 1960 and served as the community's abbot from 1983 to 1995. He was 94 years old, had been in monastic vows for 72 years and 58 years a priest when the Lord called him.
Holy Trinity officially closed in 2017. The remaining monks are now members of Gethsemani but live together at a nursing facility in Salt Lake City. Dom Malachy is to be buried in Holy Trinity's monastic cemetery.
