Anyone who has been involved in the field of Cistercian studies over the past 20 years or more will be very familiar with the work of Marsha Dutton.

She is the foremost scholar of Aelred of Rievaulx in the world today. To list the articles she has written and the books she has translated, edited, introduced or mentored into being would be far too long for this page. She is currently the editor of Cistercian Publications, and the acting editor of Cistercian Studies Quarterly. She is also a regular presence at the Cistercian Studies section of the Medieval Congress held every year at the University of Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. Her encouragement and generosity there have been the spark for many new Cistercian scholars to continue their work.

We were fortunate to have her at Gethsemani for a few days. Although occupied with business meetings during these days, she took time to give conferences to both the novices and the community. Her knowledge of monastic history and of monastic life today meant that she could make what was written in the 12th century completely relevant to our monastic life here at Gethsemani. Her deep knowledge and obvious affection for Aelred showed through in her humour and enthusiasm. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed her conferences.

We would like to thank her for her generosity and warmth and hope that she can return soon.
