From the 6th through the 27th of September, the abbesses and abbot of the Order of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance gathered from all over the world to meet for the triennial General Chapter.

As in the past few Chapters, they used the facilities of Domus Pacis, a hotel and conference center in Assisi, Italy. It is located down the hill from the old city, in the shadow of the magnificent Basilica of St. Francis, pictured left.

This Basilica is the mother house of the Order of the Friars Minor, which was founded in 1209 by St. Francis in Assisi. The Basilica is noted for, among many things, the stunning frescoes by Giotto and other late medieval artists.

The General Chapter is the central authority of the OCSO. All the major business of the Order is debated and decided there. Although surrounded by beauty and history, the Chapter is hard work for the superiors, and the schedule is full.

However, this Chapter provided a very special opportunity. Pope Francis granted a private audience to the participants. They met in St. Peter's, and celebrated mass. Afterward, Pope Francis read a short address, and then took the time to greet everyone personally.
