Austen Ivereigh, D. Phil., recently shared his insights on Pope Francis with the monks of Gethsemani. Ivereigh is author of The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope.

The first of his two talks, held in the Chapter room on Sept. 29, focused on Francis' life and the theme of mercy. The next morning, Ivereigh discussed the Holy Father's "desolation/tribulation" writings from the 1980s, which he said are being used to great effect in this current time of crisis.

Ivereigh is a London-based journalist, author commentator and campaigner. In addition to writing the papal biography The Great Reformer, Ivereigh is a former deputy editor of The Tablet and regularly contributes to such publications as America, Our Sunday Visitor and The Guardian.

A few days prior, Ivereigh gave a talk on Pope Francis and Thomas Merton at the Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University, which is hosting a series of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Thomas Merton's death. The monks were grateful he could add the abbey to his speaking itinerary. Thank you, Dr. Ivereigh, for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion!
